Keys for the City Kickoff a Success
Keys for the City kicked off the exhibit during Music Friday on May 21, 2010. The evening included live art demonstrations, much piano playing, and music performances in Lancaster Square by Go Particle, Big Red, and Mama Tried. More than 1,000 people attended- a great show of support for the exhibit. Music Fridays will be held once a month through the summer- ending with the finale of Keys for the City on September 17. Thanks go out to Music for Everyone,Society of Design, Mayor's Office of Special Events, the City of Lancaster and all the volunteers that made this exhibit possible.
Site Visits in the City of Lancaster
The final details are starting to come together. A Thursday evening was spent walking the city's streets and parks to take reference photos and measurements for the exact placements of the sponsored pianos.
Warehouse
The designs are underway at the Benchmark Construction warehouse in Brownstown, PA. Lots of good energy pouring into the pianos. The kickoff event is just around the corner.
Media Coverage
Keys for the City is starting to get attention from media throughout Central PA. The project has received coverage from Lancaster Newspapers, Comcast Local Edition, Blue Ridge Communications, and WITF.
Piano Debut at SOD Event in Harrisburg, PA
The first piano design made an appearance at the Society of Design (SOD) event at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. The design features the SOD colors of black and pink in large scale wood-graining. The first official public announcement of the Keys for the City exhibit was made to the 400+ people in attendance.
Piano Donations and Saturday Trips
The effort to find twenty working pianos continues. Our travels have taken us to Harrisburg, Middletown, Mechanicsburg, Lancaster, Ephrata, Quentin, Enola, Peach Bottom, Conestoga, close to the Mason-Dixon Line, and one spot near State College.
Each Saturday schedule begins before daybreak and typically includes four to five stops. The only things in common from one piano to the next are the facts that they're all heavy and awkward to move.
Pianos have begun to line up in the warehouse and we're getting close to having enough to pull off the project.
Thanks to everyone who has agreed to donate pianos.
